10 Muharram (Ashura)

10 Muharram (Ashura) is a significant day in the Islamic calendar, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar year,

In the month of Muharram, Hazrat Imam Hussain (Aleyhesalaam), the grandson of the last Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Mohammad Mustafa (S.A.W), and his family and followers were brutally martyred by Yazid, son of Mawiyya, and his army.

Imam Hussain (Aleyhesalaam)was born on 4th of Shaban

Father's name: Hazrat Ali

Mother's name: Fatema

Brotherr's name: Imam hasan

Grandfather's name: Hazrat Abu Talib

On the day of Jummah, 10th Muharram, 61 hijri, Imam Hussain and his family were martyred in Karbala (Iraq) by Yazid and his army.

It holds deep historical and spiritual importance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims, though the reasons for its significance differ somewhat between the two sects.

🕌 For Sunni Muslims:

  • Fasting: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) observed fasting on Ashura and encouraged others to do the same.

    • He stated that fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year.

    • It's recommended to fast two days: 9th and 10th of Muharram (or 10th and 11th) to distinguish from Jewish traditions.

    • Even today, Sabil, Waiz, Tazia and mourning are observed in the memory of Imam Hussain.

    • Below are some photos of the Tajiya being made in his memory.

    • Would you like me to include recommended duas or specific traditions for Ashura in your community (Sunni or Shia)?
